This week’s thought - Improving Yourself!
"There's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self."
~ Aldous Huxley.
"Tell
me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and
too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and
precious life." --
Mary Oliver
Dear Community,
We have all heard the saying that "it takes a village to raise a
child." This is so true when it comes to the mission here at Destiny
Progressive Group
The Problem
Every young person should have the opportunity to go to school and
learn. But that is not the reality for far too many children.
57 million children around the world do not go to school. Tens of
millions more will drop out and never complete secondary school. Another
250 million children go to school but do not learn to read or write.
Why isn’t anything being done?
We’ve started, but the job remains unfinished.
In 2000, world leaders made a commitment to get all children into
school by 2015. We are now three years from that deadline. The
out-of-school number is on the rise in some regions, threatening to
erode the progress we have made by enrolling over 40 million children.
It’s time for us to make a final push and get all children into school
and learning.
Who’s not in school
Girls
Girls represent
32 million of the out-of school children. They face discrimination, and
are forced into marriage and even subjected to violence for wanting to
learn. Every day, 25,000 girls are forced into marriage and out of
school – the end of their only opportunity to learn.
Child Laborers & Soldiers
More than 15 million children and young people are forced into child
labor and slavery. Instead of being in school, they are working in the
streets, fields or mines. Worse, more than 250,000 of those children are
being forced to serve as soldiers.
Refugees & the Disabled
Millions of children live in conflict areas, refugee camps or have been
displaced. Others suffer from disabilities like blindness, and have not
been provided the opportunity to learn.
Schools without teachers
Many children, particularly in rural areas, have no teachers. We will
need two million more teachers in order to get every child in school and
learning by 2015.
Why should we care?
We can be the first
generation to develop all of the talents of all of our young people by
enrolling every child and young person into school and making sure they
leave with basic skills. If we do this, we eliminate poverty. If we do
this, we improve health and well-being. If we do this, economies will
grow and unemployment will decrease. If we do this, we will live in a
more peaceful and secure society.
"Decide
to be your best. In the long run the world is goig to want and have the
best and that might as well be you."
Booker T. Washington, Educator
“Never underestimate the determination of a kid who is time-rich and cash-poor.”
